Instagram takeover @newyorkerphoto by @joaquintrujillo

Joaquin Trujillo posted to the New Yorker photo department’s Instagram feed from the hundred and fiftieth anniversary of La Feria Patronale de Ermita, the annual patronage festival in his home town of Ermita de Guadalupe, in the state of Zacatecas, Mexico. The four-day festival, which derives from Spanish and Mesoamerican traditions, honors the town’s patron saint, Our Lady of Guadalupe, and consists of dances, historical reënactments, and traditional food.

This year, Trujillo participated in the festival as the viejo de la danza, a costumed figure who guides the festival’s dancers in the procession to the town’s church and keeps order by scaring away evil spirits. Above is a selection of iPhone photographs that Trujillo took throughout the festival—the most recent excerpt from a fourteen-year project on his home town and its people.
