PIER 92/94 | NEW YORK CITY | MARCH 30 - APRIL 4, 2017
For The Photography Show 2017, De Soto Gallery presented a solo exhibition of Alma Haser's Cosmic Surgery. The series, comprised of 2D portraits, 3D portraits, and free-standing paper sculptures, envisions a speculative future where "cosmic surgery" is an elective procedure for aesthetic enhancement, mood alteration, and evasion of surveillance.
Blending photography with collage and origami, Haser creates playful yet uncanny portraits that challenge traditional notions of identity. Her layered constructions suggest a future where the boundaries between self and image are fluid, reflecting a transhumanist shift in how we perceive ourselves amid constant visual bombardment. Through this manipulation of form and dimension, Haser questions the stability of identity in an increasingly mediated world.
Alma Haser (b. 1990, Black Forest, Germany) received a BA (Hons) in Photography in Art Practice from Nottingham Trent University. She is the recipient of the Magenta Foundation’s Bright Spark Award for Cosmic Surgery and was shortlisted for the Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize at the National Portrait Gallery for her earlier series, The Ventriloquist.
